Bayer process liquors are purified by removing at lesst a portion of the organic impurities, by treating the liquor, containing Bayer process or added solids, such as red mud particles, alumina trihydrate, oxalate salt or filter aids, with a water-soluble cationic polymeric quaternary ammonium salt (POLYQUAT salt), which adheres to the surface of the dispersed solids. The resulting organic coating or layer provides a receptive surface for the organic impurities, thus allowing formation of a solid-Polyquat-organic adduct, which is easily removed from the Bayer system.

The preferred water soluble, cationic, polymeric salt of a quaternary ammonium base is polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (polydamam). This substance is obtained from monomeric diallyldimethylammonium chloride (dadmah), which has the following chemical structure:

In each test, 10 g of an alumina trihydrate seed are added to 100 ml of lye, which is heated to 145-150 ° F (62.8-65.6 ° C).

The introduction of the cationic quaternary ammonium salt into the Bayer liquors can be carried out at those stages of the Bayer process where liquor contains dispersed solids or where solids can be added and dispersed (in the thickening and washing of red mud).

The water-soluble vinyl cationic quaternary ammonium polymer salt is used in the range of 1-450 mg / L and preferably 2.0-50 mg / L, depending on the concentration of solids in the suspension. Depending on the amount of polymeric salt taken for purification, the content of humate (determined colorimetrically) can vary from 7 to more than 50%. The humates removed from the liquor are removed with sludge.
The removal of humates can be carried out by introducing the polydadmach into the suspension of the filtering medium before mixing it with the liquor. ,
The humates can be removed from the hydrated alumina slurry by introducing polydamax into the slurry that is to be filtered.
In all cases, polydadmac materials are aqueous solutions containing 20 wt.% Of active polydadmach copolymer.
Example 1. A suspension containing hydrated alumina and lye with an average solids concentration of 50.7% by weight, with a temperature of about 58 ° C is treated with poly dadmah in the form of a 20% active solution or in the form of a 20% diluted product. Polydadmas are injected on the suction side of the pump feeding the slurry to the filter.
Absorbance measurements are carried out at a wavelength of 691 nm using a 4 cm cell on a spectrophotometer.
The effect of polidadmaha on the removal of humate from a suspension of hydrated alumina is presented in Table 2.
From tab. 2, it follows that dilution does not significantly affect the removal efficiency of humates. iTable2

EXAMPLE 2 Enriched liquor, which is obtained from the red mud upper sump, is treated with polydynamics prior to filtration to remove residual dispersed red mud particles.
Polydamam and filtering agents are introduced into the liquor. To remove humates, a solution of the polydamacid product (20% of the active substance) is used at a dosage of 18, 31 and 57 mg / l of suspension. The polydamacous treatment agent is first diluted with water to a concentration of 194, 224, 302 mg / l, respectively, before feeding to the liquor. Then the enriched liquor containing polydadmas is filtered on filter presses, on which there is a preliminary coating of the filtering agent.
The results for the removal of humates are given in table. 3

EXAMPLE 3 Polydidmach efficiency was tested in the removal of humates from boiled suspensions of the Bayer process, and these suspensions were treated prior to the separation of the red mud by settling. Raw suspension tank having a temperature of 90-99 ° C, in contact with

Invention Formula
1. A method for removing organic impurities such as humates from liquids and suspensions of the Bayer process containing dispersed solids by treating them with a reagent and then separating the solids, characterized in that, in order to increase the efficiency of the process, a water soluble vinyl cationic polymer salt of a quaternary ammonium base with a characteristic viscosity of 0.1-1.5 dl / g in an amount of 1.0-450 mg / l.

4. Method according to paragraphs. 1 and 2, characterized in that a dially dimethyl ammonium chloride homopolymer is used as a water-soluble vinyl cationic polymer salt of a quaternary ammonium base.
